Getting the Film Look in a Few Clicks

How many clicks does it actually take to get a film look? Personally, I’ve done it within as few as three clicks.

The process can basically be broken down into these steps. The sliders are intuitive and only take a moment to set how you want.

  1. Choose your Film profile and adjust as necessary.
  2. Choose your Print profile and adjust as necessary
  3. Adjust and tailor settings and effects to your taste

I can color grade a clip within just a few minutes and get a beautiful look after selecting just a few options and adjusting some sliders.

My Favorite Dehancer Features & Effects

This is a powerful plugin, and these are some of my favorite effects to apply to my work.

Dehancer Film Profiles

Dehancer offers an expansive selection of film emulations, such as Kodak, Cinestill, Fujifilm, and others. There are a wide variety of options to choose from, and the best thing is that they’re all fully configurable. The Cinestill 800T is my favorite for night shots. This plugin allows creators to experiment with different visual styles, from film grain to truly accurate reproduction of colors and tones.

Dehancer Film Grain

Film grain is a distinctive characteristic of analog photographs and films. In Dehancer, film grain is digitally recreated using complex algorithms that mimic the look and distribution of real film grain. As with all effects, this grain is fully configurable and is much more realistic than other plugins or adjustment layer techniques.

Halation

Halation is a type of reddish glow that appears in movies when filming in places with bright or high-contrast lighting. What was once was considered a “visual error” is now sought after as a pleasing aesthetic choice.

Bloom

Bloom is an effect that creates a halo that appears in intense lights such as streetlights, spotlights or the sun.

Is Dehancer Right For You?

Dehancer isn’t free, so if you’re not making money from your creative pursuits, the Pro version might not be for you. But there are a variety of standalone products and licensing options available. For me, Dehancer Pro has been a great asset, and I can’t imagine shooting a video and not setting my print profile to Kodak 2383.
